Institute of Water Modelling (IWM) provides world–class services in the field of Water
Modelling, Computational Hydraulics & Allied Sciences for improved
integrated Water Resources Management thereby enhancing the quality of planning
and implementation activities in the relevant fields and providing solutions to
water problem in holistic approach. IWM was formed as a Trust organisation,
first as the Surface Water Modelling Centre (SWMC) Trust in 1997, which was
renamed as IWM Trust with effect from 1st August 2002. IWM functions as a centre of excellence and
research in the field of Water Modelling, Computational Hydraulics and allied
Sciences, and provides services in this field on a cost recovery basis in
enhancing the quality of planning and implementation activities in the relevant
fields which would ultimately contribute to

The number of staffs in IWM is about 160, of whom more than 70% are professionals of high standard in their respective fields and trained at home and abroad. They have high skills and expertise in Computational Hydraulics Water Modeling and allied sciences. IWM has experience in carrying out a large numbers of projects home and abroad, vis. National Water Management Plan, Jamuna Multi Purpose Bridge, Cyclone Shelter Protection, Meghna estuary Study, Command Area development in Teesta Barrage Project, Flood Forecasting and Warning, Database for Hydrology, DSS for Kaptai Resorvoir Operation, Flood Forecasting of Swarak Valley of Malaysia, Neel ganga River in Srilanka.
Areas of Activities
Research & Development
IWM carries out applied research in collaboration with academic institute and agencies likely to contribute and benefit from the research finding. The R & D of the Institute aims at practical tools that can serve a useful purpose within a relatively short time horizon, and which are intended for national planning, management and design applications. The objectives of the R & D of IWM are:
Developing solution to problems of national/international importance for the clients
Development of new tools and methods and application of new technology or tools
Organization of / participation in professional meetings, workshops and seminars
Active support to MSc and PhD studies
Publications in professional journals
Temporary exchange of personnel between IWM and research institutions in Bangladesh and abroad
Training is a regular activity of IWM and is embedded in the service of all project development. To date about forty five campaigns of trainings have been conducted for various national agencies and NGOs and a number of four hundred and fifty professionals have received these trainings. A number of training programmes have also been implemented for NAHRIM, Malaysia in 2002-2004. Similar training has also been conducted for a team of senior officials of Nepal, Faculties of ITB and local professionals of Brunie.
