Dr C S Karim (Choudhury Sazzadul Karim) was born in a respectable Muslim family in the District of Noakhali in 1949. His father is late C F Karim and mother is late Mohabbata Karim.

Dr Karim obtained his BSc (Honours) and MSc degrees in Physics from the Department of Physics, University of Dhaka in 1969 and 1970 respectively. In the year 1977 he had his PhD in Nuclear Engineering.

Just after the completion of his PhD he joined with Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) as a Senior Scientific Officer. During his long career in BAEC, Dr Karim held different important/key positions including Director of Nuclear Power and Energy Division and Member of Physical Science. He became the Chairman of BAEC on 19 May 2005 and continued till 16 November 2006. During his BAEC tenure Dr Karim was actively associated with and contributed to Energy Planning, Rural Energy Planning Study, Renewable Energy and Nuclear Power Planning.

As a nuclear scientist Dr C S Karim earned a good reputation through the successful completion of a number of important national and international assignments.

Assignments for the Government of Bangladesh  

  • Participated in formulation of National Energy Policy, 1996

  • Member of the Bangladesh Delegation to the General Conference of the IAEA (1997, 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2004)

  • Negotiation and finalization of contract with US Department of Energy (USDOE) on Nuclear Threat Reduction, 2006

International Assignments

  • Studies on Nuclear Transparency (Visiting Scholar of USEDOE at Sandia National Laboratory, USA)

  • Preparation of a Technical Document on Nuclear Power Planning for International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

  • Resource person for a course on least cost generation planning, Lahore, Pakistan (organized by IAEA and the World Bank)

  • IAEA Expert service on evaluation of nuclear programs of Kazakhstan, 13-21 March 2005

  • IAEA Expert service on evaluation of nuclear programs of Ethiopia, May 30 - June 06 2005

  • Project Manager of a Rural Energy Planning Study (sponsored by East-West Center, USA, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, ESCAP and F AO)

  • Participated in the International Working Group on Gas Cooled Reactor

  • Focal Point for the collaboration with the National Science Foundation of the USA

Dr C S Karim was sworn in as an Advisor of the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh on 18 January 2007. He took over the portfolios of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Water Resources.
