Main functions of RRI

River Research Institute (RRI) is a National Institute with the mandate of a statutory public authority, which was established under the act 53 of 1990 and has been working under the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

River Research Institute (RRI) is a multidisciplinary research Organization RRI has been conducting problem oriented tests & research in the fields of River Hydraulics of structure & Irrigation. Estuarine & Coastal Hydraulics, Mathematical Model, Soil Mechanics, Material Testing & Quality Control, Sediment Technology, Hydro-chemistry & Geo-chemistry.

Chronology

1948 to 1949 - Hydraulic Research Laboratory: Irrigation Directorate

1949 to 1978 - Hydraulic Research Laboratory: EP/WAPDA/BWDB

1978 to 1990 - River Research Institute: BWDB

1991 to onward - River Research Institute: Ministry of Irrigation, Water Development and Flood control/ Ministry of Water Resources (Statutory autonomous organization as of act 53 of 1990)

Management

River Research Institute is a statutory multipurpose research organization, which is working under the Ministry of Water Resources. Institute’s operation remains under a 10 members Board of Governors (BoG). The honorable Minister of Water Resources is the Chairman of BoG and the Director General of RRI is its Member secretary and chief executive.

The overall activities of RRI is being conducted by three directorates. These are:

a) Hydraulic Research

b) Geo-technical Research

c) Administration & Finance

Objectives

Objectives of RRI as per As 53 of 1990

To carry out studies for design supports in river training, riverbank protection, flood control, irrigation & drainage works and to conduct research in river engineering, sediment control, estuary and tidal effects by means of physical model.

To conduct mathematical model studies on river flow & regional flow network, hydrology, surface & ground water utilization and environmental issues with special attention to salinity intrusion & water quality with a view to develop the water resources.

To perform tests on construction materials required for river training, riverbank protection, flood control and irrigation & drainage structures and to inspect and evaluate the quality of the construction works thereof.

To conduct training program on the above-mentioned subjects and to publish reports and periodicals related to technical aspects.

To advise the Government, Local Authority or any organizations regarding the problems and best approach towards the solution on the above mentioned subject.

To co-operate and conduct joint ventured research work with other similar local or foreign organizations.

To take any necessary steps for performing the above mentioned works.

Activities

Research activities of RRI along with different support service works such as physical model study and laboratory tests have been conducted by Hydraulic Research Directorate & Geo-technical Research Directorate. Overall administration & financial management are controlled by the directorate of Administration & Finance.
